UNC football coach Mack Brown will be spending time with his toes in the sand this summer.
The 70-year-old trainer and his wife, Sally Brown, just spent $10 million on a beach house on an island off the coast of North Carolina, according to New Hanover County property records.
The 5,579 square foot beachfront home sits on Figure Eight Island, a gated barrier island near Wilmington that’s known as an enclave for the wealthy.
It is accessible by a single two-lane bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway and has no commercial development, only about 475 private homes, according to Figure Eight Realty.

The Browns’ new vacation home has five bedrooms that can sleep a lot more, six full bathrooms, and two powder rooms. It is on a half acre lot overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
The 4-year-old house spans four levels, its interior bathed in light from dozens of windows. The spacious living room, kitchen, and dining room all had touches of Carolina blue.
It has a bar, an elevator, two washers and dryers, a fireplace, garage spaces for two, and ample space for entertaining.
In addition to the $10 million prize, which Zillow said was $900,000 under the claim, the Browns will also pay homeowners association fees which total $5,690 per year. Taxes on the home were $21,569 last year, according to property records.
Mack Brown coached at UNC for 10 seasons from 1988 to 1997, returning to lead the program again in the 2019 season.
His contract with UNC was extended in March for five years. He earns $3.5 million a year, The N&O reported.
County records show the Browns sold a nearby home on May 19, a week before their last purchase, for $9.5 million. They bought this property in 2020 for $5 million.
Both houses are on the island, located a mile apart, with wooden walkways extending to the ocean. They are about 150 feet from the white-sand beaches, which stretch about 300 feet to the waves, according to satellite images taken this year.
The new structure sits on property that has a 0.2 percent annual risk of flooding, according to the state. Flood Risk Information System. More specific information about the house’s flood risk has not been uploaded since the house was built.
The Browns bought their Chapel Hill residence in 2019 for just over $2 million. They have owned property off Blue Ridge Parkway in the North Carolina mountains since 1994, tax records show.
