Suits in aisle 3? The old Staten Island ShopRite building is being transformed into Spirit Halloween.
STATEN ISLAND, NY – Spirit Halloween, the destination costume shop that begins selling its spooky wares in abandoned storefronts and vacant retail spaces each September, has announced a major new commercial lease on Staten Island for the 2022 haunted season. : Starting later this month, the former ShopRite in New Dorp, located at 2424 Hylan Blvd., will be part of the seasonal retailer’s temporary cache of stores.
The space, which has been vacant since October 2020 when ShopRite moved further down the main thoroughfare of The Boulevard mall, will be stocked with a selection of costumes and props, as well as home décor, party supplies and accessories until early November. Covering 56,000 square feet of retail space, the store will be one of Spirit Halloween’s largest locations.
The idle store, which is represented by Long Island-based Kimco Realty, also saw some movement this summer when the site became the backdrop for the Amazon Prime series, “Fallout.”
Fashioned to resemble the ramshackle “Super-Duper Mart” grocery store, which is the setting for all three Fallout video games, the store has been decked out with new signage, its exterior intentionally distressed. Dozens of junky, burnt-out classic cars were introduced to the lot to recreate the show’s location: a world where the future is envisioned by Americans in the late 1940s and blown up on itself during a nuclear war in 2077.
This was a rental effort to keep the building occupied. According to Joshua Weinkanz, Kimco North Region President, such attempts are underway.
“We talk to a handful of people for different types of uses. We are trying to rent it as soon as possible,” Weinkanz told Advance in January 2021.
The former supermarket will be Staten Island’s second Spirit store. The other is located at 1781 South Ave., site of the former UFC gymnasium on West Shore Plaza.
