Sheridan resigns as Wisconsin inside linebackers coach

Bill Sheridan has resigned as Wisconsin inside linebackers coach as the NCAA investigates him for possible rule violations during his tenure as Air Force defensive line coach.

Wisconsin hired Sheridan Feb. 22 after spending two years in the Air Force.

Action Network first reported that the Air Force has completed an internal investigation into recruiting violations and is awaiting a decision from the NCAA on penalties for rules violations committed by Sheridan and three other former aides. The report says Assistants provided ineligible benefits and hosted prospects during the pandemic-enforced dead period in 2020.

“While I look forward to presenting my case at a hearing, I am concerned that the NCAA investigation into activities that occurred before I joined the Wisconsin football team may be a distraction that could harm the program,” Sheridan said Friday in a statement released by the university. “Accordingly, I submit my resignation with immediate effect.”

Sheridan had arrived in Wisconsin as part of Paul Chryst’s offseason personnel changes. He filled a vacancy created when Bob Bostad, who had coached Wisconsin inside linebackers for the past five seasons, moved to the other side of the ball to coach Wisconsin’s offensive line. Bostad previously coached Wisconsin’s offensive line from 2008 to 2011.

“I want to thank Bill for his time with us,” Chryst said in a statement. “Although he was only part of our program for a short time, he had a positive impact on our players, especially the inside linebackers he worked closely with. I wish him only the best. .”

Sheridan had spent two seasons coaching Boston College linebackers before joining the Air Force. He also served as Boston College’s defensive coordinator in 2019.

The former NFL assistant was defensive coordinator for the New York Giants in 2009 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2012-2013. Sheridan coached linebackers for the Giants (2005-08), Miami Dolphins (2010- 11) and the Detroit Lions (2014-17).

“I have great respect for Coach Chryst, his staff and the student-athletes I have had the privilege of meeting and coaching over the past three months,” Sheridan said. I regret not having the opportunity to continue to be part of this special group and wish them the best of luck for the coming season.
