Scholarship offered to small island states

The Maltese Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MFEA), in collaboration with the Institute for Islands and Small States at the University of Malta (ISSI), offers scholarships to students who are nationals of certain Small Island Developing States.

According to Island Innovation, citizens of the following countries are eligible: Antigua and Barbuda, Belize, Cape Verde, Comoros, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Kiribati, Maldives , Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Federated States of Micronesia, Montserrat, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, São Tomé and Principe, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Suriname, Timor-Leste, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu.

In terms of types of scholarships, the MFEA will offer:

(1) two annual scholarships for students pursuing a full-time Master of Arts degree (Island and Small State Research) and

(2) a scholarship for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) student.

Selection criteria, among others, include past academic achievement and the quality of the research proposal.

Island Innovation pointed out that both programs can be studied entirely online or in a mixed form (in-person and online).

Interested applicants are encouraged to contact the ISSI team at Islands@um.edu.mt at the earliest to discuss admission requirements, scholarship eligibility and their research proposal. The deadline for submitting an expression of interest is April 29, 2022, for application is May 31, 2022.
