The Indian Space and Research Organization (Isro) can help small islands protect themselves from flooding due to rising temperatures, Science and Technology Minister Dr Jitendra Singh has said. The minister, in a written response to Lok Sabha, said Isro has the technology and expertise to provide cyclone pre-warning, coastal and coral reef monitoring.
Isro is preparing to provide this information to some of the Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in the Indian Ocean region, the written response states.
He reiterated that India, UK, Australia, Fiji, Jamaica and Mauritius have jointly launched an initiative, Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) to provide technical support on disaster resilience of systems infrastructure to SIDS, during the Summit of the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26). held in Glasgow this year.
Iris will also support SIDS by facilitating access to existing financial mechanisms for the development of resilient infrastructure. It will also expand its support upon request to 58 Small Island Developing States (SIDS) in all geographic regions.
It should be noted that while weather information is analyzed and disseminated by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Isro supports IMD in improving forecasting methodologies and publishes R&D results for the help of all. . The Indian space agency makes forecasts of the trajectory, intensity, landing time and location of all cyclones originating from the Indian Ocean using space-based inputs.
“Isro has carried out a vulnerability assessment of selected states along the Indian coastal region and identified sensitive coastal stretches due to sea level rise,” the Ministry of Science and Health said. Technology in a release.
The space agency will provide near real-time forecasts of storm surges and storm surge-induced flooding for the Indian coast during cyclones using satellite observations and numerical models. At the same time, coral reef maps of the Indian Ocean, Red Sea and Gulf of Aden have been published and are updated regularly.
A region-specific coral bleaching monitoring system based on sea surface temperature data is also hosted on ISRO’s VEDAS geoportal.
