IIT Jamaica on the maps? Island country expresses desire for Indian Institute of Technology
President Kovind is one of the first Indian presidents to visit the island nation. During his visit on May 17, 2022, he said that “India is poised to become a knowledge economy that creates, disseminates and uses knowledge to promote growth and development”.
According to a PTI report, President Kovind praised India’s education sector, especially the world-renowned institutes of excellence such as Indian Institute of Technology, IIT and Indian Institute of Management, IIM. Over the years, IIT and IIM have managed to grow and its alumni lead the world’s largest companies and technology companies.
“As part of our National Education Policy released in 2020, India plans to establish new Indian Institutes of Technology overseas,” President Kovind said during his address to both Houses of Parliament in Jamaica. . He then shared Jamaica’s desire to host an IIT in the island country.
President Kovind went on to highlight the features of the NEP 2020 especially with regards to how the policy has opened up specialized technical courses in India’s top colleges, institutes and universities for international students.
“Jamaican students should take advantage of this opportunity to study at some of the best and globally respected institutions, charging only a fraction of the cost compared to Western institutions,” he added. According to the PTI report, the President went on to highlight how India is growing as a hub for startups and innovative technologies and is now one of the top three countries with the most unicorns.
