Beaufort County SC Restaurant Inspection Ratings October 2022
Four Beaufort County restaurants were cited with sub-A grades during routine health inspections in September by the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control.
- Ela’s, at 1 Shelter Cove Lane on Hilton Head Island, obtained a score of 86% (B) during an inspection on October 12. Inspectors cited food temperature issues, the lack of a food dating system, and insect problems in the kitchen and storage room. The restaurant was re-inspected on October 20 and scored 100% (A).
- Red Rooster Cafe, 2045 Boundary Street Beaufort, obtained a score of 83% (B) during an inspection on October 4. Inspectors cited the lack of a food dating system, cleaning and first aid supplies stored with food, the back door left open, evidence of recent rodent activity, food preparation equipment food in poor condition and dirty floors. The restaurant was re-inspected on October 14 and scored 98% (A).
- Roadhouse Ribs, 7 Toppers Lane in Port Royal, obtained a score of 78% (B) during an inspection on October 13. Inspectors cited the temperature of the handwashing sink and dishwasher, temperature issues with a handy cooler, sanitizing of knives and the ice machine, food kept past the date of disposal, the messy and overflowing dustbin, maintenance problems on the exterior and the exterior smoke grate is not properly closed. The restaurant was re-inspected on October 21 and obtained a score of 94%.
Although this would normally mean an A rating, Roadhouse Ribs has been designed to retain a B rating until another follow-up inspection. A note from the inspector said the restaurant had ordered a new water heater and was boiling water for washing dishes in the meantime.
- Wild Wing Cafe, at 72 Pope Ave. on Hilton Head, obtained a score of 78% (B) October 25. Inspectors cited food temperature issues, unlabeled and improperly stored sanitizers, problems with the mechanical dishwasher, poor condition cutting boards, cabinet doors in the prep area falling off, a handle from the broken handy cooler, a leak under a sink, and a dirty prep and dishwashing area. The restaurant was re-inspected on October 28 and obtained a score of 92%.
Although that would normally mean an A grade, Wild Wing Cafe received a C grade. Inspectors cited previously noted violations, including broken freezer handle, dirty prep area and dishwashing area, and leak under a sink. In addition, inspectors found water that was not hot enough in several sinks. A third inspection on October 31 was successful in a score of 98%, but the restaurant was forced to maintain its C rating until another follow-up inspection. A note from the inspector says the restaurant was without gas and voluntarily closed until gas service could be restored to the kitchen and water heater.
Phone calls to the Wild Wing Cafe this week have gone unanswered.
What do the grades mean
